As a birthday gift to myself this year, I purchased an annual membership to the Missouri Botanical Gardens. To thank new members for joining the garden network, the garden hosted a New Member tour of the garden. Our docent, Ginny, led our group in a fantastic tour of the gardens, interlaced with plant information and historical tidbits about the garden’s beginnings.

I enjoyed learning more about Henry Shaw and his impact not only on the garden itself, but his impact on the city of Saint Louis. A very successful entrepreneur in Saint Louis, Shaw retired early at the age of 40 and spent his remaining years philanthropically building the botanical garden network. Known for his generosity and perhaps eccentricity, Shaw is a beloved figure to the Saint Louis community.
