The Jewel Box in Forest Park is a city icon. Due to increasingly rising smoke and soot levels within the city limits at the turn of the century, the Jewel Box was originally constructed to showcase plant life that could survive such high levels of smog. The art deco building was erected in the mid 1930s, and was renovated in the early 2000s. The Jewel Box is now an event venue and sits on the National Historic Register.
